Many people think that search engine optimization (SEO) is a onetime thing. Set it in motion. Forget about it. Reap the rewards. Most of the time, however, a good SEO strategy can take months in order to show results. And making consistent progress takes ongoing effort.

In many ways, SEO is really a lot like bodybuilding.
Results Don’t Happen Overnight

You don’t do 100 sit-ups one day and expect to see rock-hard, six-pack abs the next.

There is no quick solution in SEO, either. It can take weeks of hard work to see improvement. Only by setting up a smart strategy and putting in regular effort will you will begin to see substantial results.
Set Realistic Goals

If you’re just starting a weight-lifting program, you can’t expect to compete for the title of Ms. or Mr. Universe right away.

Likewise, achieving first page rankings for competitive keywords in a saturated market could require full-time effort by an experienced SEO expert.
Stick to It

So, you’ve gained some muscle, increased your energy levels, and lost those stubborn pounds. Do you stop exercising, now that you have achieved your goal? Not if you want to retain those results. With disuse, muscles begin to decrease in size. They become weaker.

If you work hard to gain first page rankings and then just stop putting in any effort, your site may start to slide down in the search engine results. By scoping out your competition, understanding what you need to do to maintain your rankings, and putting in regular effort, you can maintain (and even improve) your hard-won results.
